Health Coverage Options

What are all the ways to get health insurance coverage? Here's a list of most of the options for individuals and families who are not eligible for Medicare.

Employer-Sponsored Coverage (ex. your job offers it)

  • Health insurance offered through a job is often the most affordable option, with employers typically covering a portion of the premium.
  • These plans usually offer comprehensive benefits with access restricted to specific networks.

ACA Marketplace (Obamacare)

  • Government-subsidized health plans.
  • These plans cover pre-existing conditions, essential health benefits, and may include tax credits based on income.
  • Cannot be denied coverage for pre-existing conditions.
  • Can only enroll during special periods or open enrollment (Nov 1 - Dec 15).

Private Health Plans (not Obamacare)

  • Broader networks than ACA Marketplace plans.
  • Best for those who don’t qualify for subsidies or prefer options outside the Marketplace.
  • Can be denied coverage for pre-existing conditions.
  • Enrollment (if eligible) is open year-round (must apply by 20th of prior month).
  • Cost is based on age and your choice of deductible/network access.
  • Lower deductible plans will cost more and higher deductible plans are cheaper.

Short-Term Health Insurance

  • Temporary plans that last from 1-4 months.
  • Enrollment open year-round.
  • You must answer health questions to qualify.

Health Sharing Ministries

  • Faith-based cost-sharing arrangements where members help pay each other’s medical expenses.
  • These are not insurance and may have restrictions on coverage based on beliefs or lifestyle.

Supplemental Coverage (Cancer, Accident, Hospital Plans)

  • Add-on plans that pay cash benefits for specific health events.
  • Useful for financial protection alongside a high-deductible plan—or even on their own.

Go Without Insurance

  • Some individuals choose to pay out-of-pocket for care and skip monthly premiums.
  • This option carries extreme financial risk but may work for those with minimal healthcare needs and strong savings.
